FAQ
Notary Costs & Fees: What You Should Know
Questions about notarization pricing and fees.
How much does notarization cost?
Notary fees vary by state, location, and notary. Typical in-person notarization costs $2-$15 per signature. Some notaries charge travel fees or higher rates for complex documents. Remote online notarization costs $15-$50+. Ask your notary for pricing upfront.
Why do different notaries charge different prices?
State law sets maximum fees, but notaries can charge less. Factors affecting price: location (urban vs. rural), experience, specialization, travel distance, document complexity, and time required. Mobile notaries charge more due to travel. RON platforms typically charge more due to technology.
Are notary fees the same in every state?
No. Each state sets its own maximum notary fee. Some states cap fees at $5 per act, while others allow up to $25 or more. Research your state's maximum fee. Private notaries often charge less than the maximum.
Do I need to pay extra for travel?
Yes, if you request a mobile (traveling) notary. Mobile notaries typically charge a travel fee in addition to the notarization fee. Travel fees may be $15-$100+ depending on distance. Ask about travel fees when calling.
Is notarization more expensive than having a lawyer review a document?
Notarization ($5-$50) is much cheaper than legal review. Notaries verify signatures and administer oaths; they don't provide legal advice. If you need legal advice about a document, consult an attorney. Many people combine both services.
Can notaries charge for multiple signatures?
Yes. If a document has multiple signatures requiring notarization, notaries typically charge per signature or per notarial act. A document with 5 signatures requiring notarization might cost $25-$50 total.
Are there discounts for large batches of documents?
Some notaries offer bulk discounts for notarizing many documents at once. If you have multiple documents, ask your notary if they offer volume rates. This is common for business closings or bulk recordations.
What payment methods do notaries accept?
Most notaries accept cash, credit/debit cards, and checks. Some mobile and remote notaries may require payment upfront or by card. Ask what payment methods are accepted when scheduling.
